A print diptych revealing the process behind the making of INSULAE (of the Island)

INSULAE (of the Island) is a video installation taking the viewer a simulated ocean journey, a perpetually looping patrol around the British sea borders generated using Google Earth. The 6 hours of video footage were created through an act of drawing: within Google Earth a single line was painstakingly drawn, circling the entire British mainland. This line then becomes the path for a virtual camera to travel along, a disembodied viewpoint simultaneously generating a simulated world and recording the journey through it.

This pair of digital prints are created from captures of the artist's screen while working on INSULAE. They show the path of the virtual camera as it travels through the simulated topography of the Scottish Hebrides. The prints show a landscape in a dreamlike space of slippage between 'reality' and strangeness, a landscape of patchworked frozen instants in time, generated from statellite imagery and reconstructed by Google's AI systems.
